8th THE TONES, 24 in number, of which 12 are major and 12 minor, are the forms that a character constantly deploys according to its dominant passions, which vary at 12 pivots, since there are 12 radical passions; but one counts 24 pivots of character in passional harmony, where one does not confuse the major and the minor as in the gross usage of civilized music which forms only one keyboard in major and minor octave, although one knows full well that the difference of the sharp to the flat is 5/12 to 7/12. Civilized people, to simplify their keyboards, assemble both on 6/12. God who operates with rigorous exactitude does not thus confuse the middle and minor touches in passional terms and treats passional modulations on a double keyboard of character as in the anomal modulation of the stars where he treats it on a double keyboard of moons or touches whose 12 minors are governed by the sub-hearths HERSCHEL URANUS JUPITER, the 12 majors by the sub-hearths SATURN and EARTH (the latter is currently deprived of its keyboard of 5 moons or sharped major touches). The human race in its career also has 24 tones, distinct and alternating social moduli that depend on the 24 creations the globe must receive. The social moduli can only vary at the epochs of new creations of which it is not yet time to speak.
9th THE MODULATIONS are 4 in number: direct, inverse, positive, negative. By modulation I understand the course that an intrigue or passion follows from its birth to its end, which is not the denouement, for the denouement of a love intrigue is not the end of that love; it is only a transition or modification that does not prevent one from continuing to modulate love by adding enjoyment to it. In Harmony the modulations play out over passional choruses; in the human career they play out over series of generations. All of humanity from two centuries after the flood has modulated in simple inverse, which is the order most opposed to combinations and to happiness.
