musician would play different airs in various keys, resulting in an infernal cacophony like the mendacious relations of civilization.

5th THE ESSORS, the harmonic or truthful source and the inverse or mendacious source. The harmonic essor comprises the two middle phases, youth and maturity, of the social career. In these ages of harmony relations operate in a truthful system. The inverse essor comprises the two extreme phases, childhood and old age. In these ages relations operate in a false or subversive order, and so they are completely false on our globe where the most vicious periods of social childhood still reign.

Developments, whether in truthful essor or in mendacious essor, are infinite; there is no limit assigned to passional essors. For example in the civilized state which is an inverse essor, the developments of the passions are as varied as fevers, of which new varieties are discovered each year, just as one discovers without cease new effects of perfidy in the development of civilized passions.

6th THE SUB-HEARTHS are the middle ages of each phase; on a mass of men in a phase of growth or youth of fifteen to forty years, the men of sub-hearth will be at the ages of 25 to 30 who have the common character of youth; the men of fifteen not yet developed in character, those of 40 on the point of losing it, are the least imbued with the dominant spirit of this phase; the passional sub-hearths have functions to which no attention is paid in civilization.

7th THE COUNTER-HEARTH is the crisis of advent to puberty or middle ascending transition. There exist on this effect of movement fixed calculations of the highest importance but which, having no relation except with harmony, are useless to define here and will be expounded
