It must adapt itself to the passions, failing which there would be duplicity in the universal mechanism. But we are not yet at this research. Let us begin by analyzing and assembling the materials from which we shall compose our edifice.
Mathematics as regulatory principle, love as hyper-neutral hearth.
The neutral mode, which is the universal link of the system of the universe, is almost unknown to civilized peoples. It has been seen that there exists a neutral principle, mathematics, a regulatory principle serving as the link between the two others which are God and matter. The same holds in the details of the passional mechanism for the graduated effects of the neutral, the developments that partake of both one and the other kind. Let us begin by establishing this distinction in the 12 radical passions divided as has been seen into 5 material or passive, 4 active and 3 distributive or neutral.
Love, a passion of double function, holds the rank of hyper-neutral or chief of the neutrals. It is the neutral par excellence, the supreme link; it is half composed of material and spiritual pleasures. It also has, among its properties, that of leveling or confusing ranks and contrasts, which are forgotten when love has spoken. Its typical curve, the ellipse, is a double hearth by emblem of the double function of the passion that is at once material and spiritual. It is the curve that the worlds describe in Harmony. As love in the new order will be the path of general harmony, and by allusion the azure, color of love, is the field of celestial harmony. We shall therefore distinguish love under the name of hyper-neutral hearth or general pivot of movement, neutral because of its property of belonging exclusively neither to matter nor to spirit, but combining both.
